Master ChiefIn a weird turn of events one of the most iconic characters on the Xbox 360 console, Master Chief from Halo, is making appearances on one of its bitter rivals, the PS3. Unfortunately for PS3 owners and Sony execs they are not getting a Halo port any time soon but Spartan 117 is nonetheless a playable character thanks to a very clever mod for Epic Games’ Unreal Tournament 3.

The Unreal Tournament franchise has had a very strong following along with a heavy dose of interesting mods that includes new levels, character models and even tweaks to the physics engine. In this version of the popular shooter, PS3 owners can download user-generated content for the PC version including the Master Chief model, which is in a beta stage at the moment but will be available soon (according to comments on the the model’s original creator’s webpage).

Everybody expected an uproar by Microsoft and swift legal action due to copyright issues but apparently the model doesn’t break any rules because they aren’t selling it so everyone’s happy about The Chief’s cameo appearance. This move (or lack of it) by Microsoft is very positive for the gaming community as it encourages the development of content and it can only help with the popularity of the Halo franchise, if such a thing is possible. Along with the Spartan there are also models for Cloud from Final Fantasy VII and a Locust from Gears of War. All the models are very detailed and incredibly similar to the real deal.
