Night Stalker, which was just released recently for the Intellivision, is quickly becoming one of the “must have” titles for the system. Its challenging, survival based gameplay, combined with its simple yet effective soundtrack, is quickly building a loyal fan-base. It is doing so well that Mattel is working on bringing the game to the Atari 2600 and the Mattel Aquarius later this year. There are rumors though, that the Atari 2600 version will be released under the name Dark Cavern. While confirmation couldn’t be received, there is a rumor that it will also appear on Apple and IBM computers.
The basic gameplay in Night Stalker looks easy, but requires quick thinking and strategy. The player is trapped in a strange cavern, with all sorts of creatures assaulting him. Bats and spiders stalk the paths, ready to debilitate a player who doesn’t pay attention. The real danger though, comes from the unnatural robots which also stalk the caverns. The player’s only defense is a gun with five bullets. You have to know when to attack and when to run, and those robots just keep getting smarter and strong the longer you survive.
Personally my best score is 54,000. If it hadn’t been for that black robot, I probably could have done better, but luck wasn’t with me. My gun ran out of bullets, the only other gun popped up near two gray robots and the black robot had destroyed my bunker. I’m hoping next time I get to the invisible robot.
