We have just learned that Mattel’s new title for the Intellivision, Shark! Shark!, will be receiving a limited initial printing of only 5,600 copies. According to an inside source from Mattel, the marketing department believes that the title will only attract the attention of children, and so only a few copies will be released initially to determine if there is a place in the market for the title. While it is often difficult to get exact numbers when it comes to shipments, it is rumored that Shark! Shark!‘s release is the smallest of any Intellivision title.
The game certainly has an interest premise. Players start as a small fish in the ocean filled with other, bigger fish. In order to survive, you must eat fish smaller than you in the hopes you will grow bigger and become unstoppable. However there is the little matter of the shark, whose only weak point is his tail. Players must constantly assault his tail to defeat the sharks that pass by. Its eat or be eaten in the ocean.
I know Mattel is billing it as a children’s title, but I think it looks like a lot of fun. The two player mode, where if you’re big enough you can even eat your opponent, looks like it would be a lot of fun. Plus that shark looks pretty tricky – I bet this game gets challenging once you’ve passed 50,000 points.
