Jump Ultimate Stars Kakashi cross stitch

First off, I realize this week’s cross stitch is a bit late. (Normally they’re up on Mondays or Tuesdays.) However I ran into a little problem concerning thread color (the two shades of brown were actually identical, imagine that), so I didn’t finish the piece until Wednesday night.

Jump Ultimate Stars is easily one of the best DS titles. It’s just absolutely perfect, and insanely addicting. There also happen to be some amazing sprites in the game. Since I’m something of a closet Naruto fan, I decided to create a cross stitch of a character from that series who happened to appear in that game. Since I also happen to like dogs, I decided a Kakashi cross stitch was in order. I like to call it “Storytime.” Aren’t the puppies precious?

I set off to one of my regular sprite haunts, Sprite Database, and quickly found the appropriate sprite sheet and set to work. Initially there was a bit of trouble. I only had a certain sized piece of aida cloth left, and I thought I counted correctly and figured that maybe I could make the whole, full sprites fit on it. I was wrong.

Clearly, as evidenced by the picture on the right, that would not work. I cut off the offending area and restarted on the remaining cloth.

After a rough beginning, the completed piece above is the result. It is definitely my most complicated video game cross stitch so far and I’m pretty proud of it. There are 13 different colors of embroidery floss which make up Kakashi, and 11 different colors in his three dogs. I also had to edit the dog sprites to make the pattern work. The original sprite has four dogs, but the fourth dog’s head would have been cut off due to lack of space. So I had to improvise a bit. (Don’t worry – that dog wasn’t cute anyway.)

As for next week, well, I haven’t started a cross stitch yet. I’m thinking I’ll probably take a week off, because this Kakashi cross stitch ended up getting pretty annoying towards the end. I would like to do a Final Fantasy cross stitch though.
