Upcoming film adaptation Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time has just received it’s title character. Acclaimed actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain, Donnie Darko, Jarhead) has just signed on to play the role, according to a recent post at Ars technica. The film is being produced by Mr. Blockbuster Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), so it looks like the project is in good hands (and safe from Uwe Boll territory).
The plot details, from the post:
“Alongside the beautiful Gemma Arterton, Gyllenhaal will assume the role of Dastan, the young sixth century prince of Persia who is fighting for the sands of time. Arterton plays a foxy princess, Dastan’s counterpart, who fights alongside him and—spoiler warning—will likely fall in love with him.”
Sounds like fun. And while it’s very Hollywood to cast a white actor in a Middle-Eastern role, Gyllenhaal is more than capable of doing the prince justice.
