With its amazing graphics and rare humor, there have been seven games chronicling the of adventures of Abe, Munch and the Stranger’s adventures through the whimsical world of Oddworld, but it has been nearly four years since gamers last got to play an Oddworld game.
That is about to change. Lorne Lanning, president of Oddworld Inhabitants, told Game Industry Biz that his studio is working on the next game in the series:
“I can confirm that we’re working with Jeff [Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun] on Oddworld stuff, but that’s all I can say at this time.”
While almost nothing has been revealed about what the next Oddworld game will be like or who it will star, Braun did tell Cord Weekly in another interview that the upcoming Oddworld game will use development tools at par with the most state-of-the-art animation films made today.
“The rendering tools are getting so good now for 3D animation that you can literally create a linear animation and create a video game using the exact same objects”
Oddworld games have featured amazing cinematic graphics, so much so that a short animation for Oddworld: Abe’s Exodus was submitted for Oscar consideration 1998. The last Oddworld game was the 2005 release of Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath for the original Xbox.
Stranger turned the series on its head, going from cute and funny to a more serious, action-packed title that utilized both first-person controls and third-person designs. While the game didn’t reach sales figures as high as previous games in the series, Stranger’s Wrath was a stellar title that received widespread critical praise.
