Motley CrueApple’s iTunes juggernaut has been beaten by Rock Band. Yes, Rock Band, the video game. A brand new single from an upcoming Motley Crue album has registered more downloads as a Rock Band download compared to iTunes and Amazon.

The single, “Saints of Los Angeles,” has been downloaded 47,000 on Xbox 30 Marketplace and PS3 Store since it first became available as a Rock Band download, according to Reuters. The same track has downloaded merely 10,000 times on iTunes and Amazon combined.

It is difficult to recall something quite like this but it is no coincidence if Allen Kovac, Motley Crue’s manager, is to be believed. It was after much deliberation and research that the band decided to release the new single as a Rock Band DLC. They found that the average Motley Crue listener is a young gamer and specially fancies Rock Band. So they directly targeted their most ardent fans.

Kovac, perhaps out of sheer gratitude for Rock Band, even told Reuters that the resurrection of rock has occurred due to Rock Band and Guitar Hero. The success of this single might inspire other musicians as well and then it might not be all that rare for a song to have more downloads as a dlc than on an online music store.
