Project Powder is a free massive multiplayer online (MMO) snowboarding game still in the closed beta phase, but that hasn’t stopped Outspark from announcing that it will be released commercially worldwide in August, 2008. Right now the closed beta phase is in effect until July 8, 2008, so players can help the developers out by testing and spotting any potential problems. The closed beta participants are also competing for some nifty prizes, so you may want to try signing up.
In Project Powder, players create a snowboarding avatar, and then head out to snowboard and perform tricks on one of 33 different courses. If you’re a beginner, you can play on your own until you figure out the tricks. If you think you’re pretty good, then you can challenge other players.
There are a number of different Project Powder closed beta promotions being held as well. Every closed beta player who hits level five will receive a limited edition hooded sweatshirt for their character to wear. There are also extra contests for premium item-mall items for nabbing good screen shots, finding bugs and glitches in the game and leveling up your character. There are also official Outspark employees acting as Game Masters in the game, and if closed beta players can beat them in multiplayer, they can enter a contest to win gift cards or music players.
I’ve heard good things about Project Powder. The closed beta is supposedly really easy to get into, and it is supposedly a lot of fun to play. The only gripe I’ve heard from people involved so far concerns connection issues and a few minor glitches.
