Rune Factory 2 boxIn Fall 2008, Natsume and Marvelous Entertainment will welcome us back to the charming setting of the Kingdom of Norad in Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon to the DS.

This sequel is set several years after the original Rune Factory where peace was achieved after the defeat of the evil Sechs Emprie by our former protagonist Raguna. Now, in the village of Alvarna, a young boy named Kyle has finally reached the age where he is old enough to travel on his own. However, before he begins his grand adventure, he is plagued by a premonition of doom which threatens the peace of the kingdom. Naturally, it’s Kyle’s job to clean this mess up before it gets out of hand and bring peace once more to the great Kingdom of Norad.

Similar to its Harvest Moon namesake franchise, the Rune Factory series separates itself by incorporating role-playing type elements into its gameplay. The main character’s actions are bound to meters which increase as he gains more experience through combat and farming. Players must battle with monsters in order to progress the storyline and improve their statistics for future success.

Rune Factory veterans will find the setting of Rune Factory 2 familiar and easy to adapt to. Players balance their time between developing a farm, befriending townsfolk, defeating or raising ghastly ghouls and, finally, nabbing a mighty fine wife through the fine arts of sweet-talking and gift-giving.

Unlike the original, though, Rune Factory 2 will rely more on touch screen controls that intend to make the the menus easier to use. Instead of pressing the start button to access the inventory screen, a player will be able to utilize touchable tabs on the lower left corner of the Nintendo DS touch screen. One of the most interesting game play additions is the fact that Rune Factory 2‘s storyline is broken up into two segments. The first segment places players in the shoes of Kyle while the second half allows players to assume the role of Kyle’s child who can be either a boy or girl depending on how the genetic dominoes fall. This means that there are even more ripe young bachelors and bachelorettes for the courting. Lastly, and possibly not exciting as the previous tweak, is that players will be able to further engage the townspeople by assisting them with specific quests.

Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon promises to be yet another heart-warming tale of love and laughter mixed with the grit under your fingernails from harvesting crops and shanking goblins.
