Japanese Import: Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 2 Duo for DS

Released on July 31, 2008, SNK Playmore’s Nintendo DS game Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 2 Duo (DDMS2) stars middle school student and resident bad-boy, Akuji Nishimura, who returns as the now infamous girl groper witch hunter with a mission. Watch out girls (and boys – he discriminates not). With such a racy theme, it’s pretty safe to say that this title won’t make it outside of Japan.

Teamed up with a new accomplice, Kuro, Akuji will (literally) have his hands full “investigating” a brand new harem of young nubile girls who he must prove are entwined with the occult.

While this game may look very cute, fluffy and, most of all, bouncy, it is very text-heavy. Those unfamiliar with Japanese kanji may feel a little intimidated but it would definitely help someone to practice determination, discipline and tenacity, all very admirable qualities. Since there is no nudity in this game, it can hardly be considered a hentai game and would much better be found nestled in the softcore ecchi corner of a store.

The premise for the original DDMS was to assist a condescending little angel named Lulu to identify several different witches who had snuck into Akuji’s school. In order to find a witch, Akuji had to locate a witch’s mark located somewhere on the suspect’s body. However, the witch’s mark did not make itself visible unless said witch was excited or her heart was pounding (doki doki). In order to find this mark, Akuji was to strategically “feel up” girls in certain places in order to make the girls become excited enough for the witch’s mark to make itself visible. If this doesn’t sit well, then please be comforted by the fact that all parties involved are equally underage and eventually beaten into submission.

DDMS2 replicates the same formula of its predecessor. The flow of the game is separated into 3 different modes: search mode, magic battle mode, and witch check mode.

• Search Mode: The player must visit numerous different locales within the neighborhood and school in order to uncover clues that might incriminate the targeted suspect. Along the way, players can engage different characters in dialogue that may or may not progress the storyline. Unfortunately, more often than not, players will realize that clues are usually stumbled upon by frantically and randomly poking the stylus at the screen.
• Magic Battle Mode: Once enough clues have been found, Akuji can confront the suspect where he must beat his subject into submission before being able to proceed with the witch check mode. Akuji’s main weapon is a sword that is used to inflict damage on the witch should she be close enough, as well as deflect oncoming attacks. Using the sword is quite easy and it revolves around simply tapping the screen. Once Akuji shows the witch who’s boss, she will befriend him and add her specific ability to his arsenal of attacks to be used against other delinquent witches later in the game.
• Witch Check Mode: Now, that your DS must be as dimpled as swiss cheese, we can move onto witch check mode, the bread and butter of this game. Once again, the stylus will be the primary arbitor of perverseness as Akuji must make each witch reach the critical state known as “doki doki mode”. There are several different actions that can be performed during witch check mode: touch, look, blow, magnify, and present evidence. While every other action involves the stylus, the blow option allows player to select a spot on the witch’s body to physically blow on using the DS mic. In essence, witch check mode is where players simply poke at a bunch of different still images coupled with a set number of phrases, and sometimes, if you’re frisky enough, you’ll stumble upon a few key animations.

To promote replayability, there are reverse pandas and bunnies scattered about that players can collect during their investigations. Based on how many of these collected, the game will unlock extra mini-games and unlockable stages. Rumored unlockable content also includes a witch check mode that can be played at one’s leisure, independent from having to play through the main storyline. At least that would be a reason to keep a sharp eye out.
