I attended an advance screening of the IMAX version of The Dark Night this evening. While I cannot give you a full review yet, here’s what I can tell you about Warner Bros. latest Batman flick without any major spoilers:
Gotham City is pretty much modern New York City (OK, Chicago). No plasticky looking buildings or the gritty, gothic look of the previous films.
The mood is likewise. More realistic and less cartoony or overly themed.
At least one main character dies.
There is plenty of explosions and death.
The BatPod is pretty cool and will have one audience-clapping moment.
There is more than one villain in the movie.
There are some Bat-Wannabes, which is pretty much the only (new) nod to The Dark Night Returns graphic novel.
There is plenty of new tech.
You’ll see at least one foreign location.
Someone does discover Batman’s true identity.
There are a few tiny, tiny nods to earlier films, but only a movie buff will get them.
There are a couple of iconic comic book scenes but, again, only a fan will get them.
The IMAX was amazing and the sound booming.
One warning: This is not a kid-friendly movie. The PG-13 rating is well deserved. There were some 9-10-year-old kids in the theater and I’m certain they are having nightmares right now.

I almost forgot – the Watchmen trailer. Holy crap, holy crap holy crap did the trailer look great. I was a bit skeptical about the movie until I saw that. Dark, gritty and lots of amazing effects. Even the music was offbeat and a bit gritty.
