With E3 finally wrapped up and Comic Con just around the corner, it’s time to chill out and take a look at one of game culture’s coolest exhibitions: I am 8-bit. The game-themed fine art show is returning in 2008 to the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery in Hollywood this August 14th. This year, the exhibition is set to be the biggest ever, with work from well-known artists and newcomers alike – a point the promoters are stressing in the press release:

“Over one hundred artists are contributing to this year’s I AM 8-BIT, the show’s largest contingent yet, with a roster of established street and underground talent being added to the mix. “I was a fan of I AM 8-BIT because it was the one art show in LA that strived to incorporate a wide variety of artists, from pop painters to animators to graphic designers,” says curator Derek Puleston. ‘This year, we’ve tried hard to enlist new-to-the-scene artists. I AM 8-BIT has always been about breath and quality of work – not credentials – because ultimately, it’s about great visual storytelling, not fame.”

It all starts with an opening night extravaganza party on August 14th, and runs until September 14, 2008. I’ve always personally loved the work that comes out of the 3-year-old show, since it merges the popular, iconic images we all know and love from games and twists and comments on them using every media you can imagine. As an art nerd and game nerd, it’s like heaven for me. Check out the latest show’s website or peek in this August if you’re in the LA area.
