Wii and DS

Japan always seems to get the coolest things. Besides the fact that most of its technology makes Westerners look downright primitive, it also brings more innovative support for videogame consoles for the territory. Earlier this week Nintendo announced that it has partnered with FujiFilm to bring a digital photo service to the Wii. A few days later we learn plans are being developed to bring digital comics to the Wii and DS.

Four of Japan’s biggest manga publishers – Kadokawa, Kodansha, Shueisha and Shogakukan – named the project “Librica” and will deliver digital comics through WiiWare. Plans for the DS will come into play after the service has launched on the Wii. Other publishers will also have the chance to take part in this service as time goes on.

There’s no word on whether this service will move outside of Japan or not. Pricing, release dates and specific manga titles have not yet been announced.

It would be nice if western comic book publishers were to form a similar service to be released on consoles and handheld game systems.
