Barbie just can’t get a break. Mattel has been unveiling a line of Superhero themed dolls – among them Wonder Woman, Batgirl and Supergirl, but the Barbie iteration of Black Canary has gotten heat from conservative groups. Their complaint? That the doll is too sexually suggestive and constitutes “filth” according to Christian Voice, a conservative U.K. group.
ICV2 had the scoop:
“Barbie has always been on the tarty side and this is taking it too far. A children’s doll in sexually suggestive clothing is irresponsible – it’s filth,” was U.K. group Christian Voice’s take on the doll, part of Mattel’s Black Label line of dolls, described on Mattel’s Barbie Collector web site as “For the adult collector, age 14 and older.”
Let’s hope the Black Canary gets a little more respect when she shows up in DC Universe Online later this year on the PS3. Otherwise, I’m thinking this group is seriously overreacting, but that’s just my (slightly bemused) opinion.
