Thinking Green: Game controllers should go eco-friendly

These days conserving energy is a top priority especially with the amount of power the Xbox 360 and PS3 can consume on a daily basis. Although we have yet to see a serious attempt to make an environmentally friendly console, one device is planting the idea of wireless game controllers without batteries.

The Wind-Up Remote Control uses hand power instead of battery power. It works by rotating a wheel at the bottom of the remote until the controller is completely charged. Apparently rotating the wheel 30 times will give the remote enough power to last a week. This control also works with many name-brand devices made by Sony, Samsung, Phillips, and Panasonic. It seems to be a relatively good bargain in the long run as it will cost approximately $40 from Gizoo.

If the technology behind this device takes off the chances of us seeing some eco-friendly controllers aren’t too far behind. The only problem is that videogame controllers constantly consume power due to the amount of activity that’s required of them where as remote controls usually sit for hours on end without any energy being expended. Game controllers can benefit from this by implementing some sort of charging mini game whenever you feel the need for an extra boost. It has to be quick though, since people seem to be impatient while gaming (especially when accepting technology that has a faults in its initial incarnation – N-Gage anyone?).
