It has been a year since our sister site Gadgetell ran a story about a PSP Phone patent. Back then, all that we had for an illustration was in the form of a blueprint but now we actually have a prototype. Of course, this is a hacked PSP Phone not related to the previously mentioned PSP Phone.
It appears that some hacker (who my sources fail to name) has put a Haier handset onto a PSP, which turns one of the most popular portable gaming systems into a cellular phone. Not just any cellular phone but one with a full touchscreen. In other words, the PSP and iPhone have mated and produced this offspring.
Of course, this is really a love child more than anything. No doubt Haier and Sony did not approve of his measure, but I think we are all glad that no abortion occurred.
Unfortunately, a feature was sacrificed for the sake of this union. To make this phone, the UMD drive had to be removed which means no more watching UMD movies. Then again, is anyone watching UMD films these days?
As you might have guessed, this PSP Phone is by no means official, and who knows when Sony will get smart enough to market one. However, this hacked gadget definitely sends a loud message to Sony comparable to Djimon Hounsou’s character in Amistad: “Give us a cell! Give us a cell!”
