Sierra's Last DayLast year we reported that Sierra Entertainment was “ramping up the development of new products”. Unfortunately, it appears that “ramping” has tipped the other way. Apparently, the new merger of Activation Blizzard with Vivendi has led to the end of Sierra, one of the greatest computer game creators in the last century.

Sierra created all kinds of videogame classics including the Kings Quest, Police Quest, and Space Quest series, as well as the ones that pushed the envelope for “kid’s games” such as Half-Life and the Leisure Suit Larry series.

I am sad to say that Sierra has just released its last game and even more sad to say the game is nothing more than a movie tie-in to The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. It is almost insulting that Sierra’s swan song is nothing more than a knock-off when they pioneered the first adventure based video games with graphics.

So, I am shedding a tear for the death of a video game company who made the games I loved as a kid. Games that were so difficult I had to buy the strategy guide, or “hint booklet” as they called them back then. This was before the Internet and these tiny booklets came with invisible ink pens or red viewers, so you never saw more than the the clues you were looking for.

I would like you all to participate in a little candlelight vigil I’m holding for this fine gaming company. Feel free to leave a comment about Sierra and how it turned you into the gamer you are today.
