Siliconera wants to teach people Japanese with Dinosaurs and Katakana

Siliconera has just revealed a brand new flash game for anyone who’s ever been interested in learning Japanese. Dinosaurs and Katakana is a game designed to help people learn katakana, the Japanese writing system most commonly used to spell foreign words.

It is basically a typing game – on the left are fleeing citizens, and lumbering dinosaurs come onscreen from the right. In order to save the people, you have to type out the romanji (English alphabet characters) that correspond to the katakana appearing in bubbles above the dinosaurs’ heads. At first, the bubbles will have both the katakana and the romanji equivalents, but as the game progresses, it will only show the katakana. Each level adds in new katakana.

Siliconera is also holding a contest to promote Dinosaurs and Katakana. The person in first place on October 19, 2008 will receive a Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit prize bundle with the PS3 game Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit and a t-shirt. Also, one of the people in the top ten will be randomly picked on that day and win Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis for the PS2.
