Fallout 3 has gone gold

After spending more than four years in development, Bethesda Softworks announced that Fallout 3 — the highly anticipated third installment in the post-apocalyptic Fallout role-playing series — has achieved gold master status.

Fallout 3 takes place in the year 2277, 30 years after the events of Fallout 2. It follows a member of Vault 101 (a fallout shelter underneath Washington, DC) on a quest to locate his (or her) father (as voiced by Liam Neeson) after he ventures out into the desolate wastelands outside the vault.

Not content to simply confirm the game’s readiness for its impending launch (October 28, 2008, in North America, October 30, 2008, in Europe and Australia, and October 31, 2008, in the UK), Bethesda has also released the minimum and recommended system requirements for the Windows version of Fallout 3, which will launch alongside the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.

In addition to a 2.4 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 (or equivalent) processor and 1GB of RAM, Windows XP users will be expected to have access to a DirectX 9.0 compatible video card with a least 256MB of on-board RAM. Vista users, on the other hand, will require an additional 1GB of system RAM, while both will benefit from a more powerful (512MB RAM) video card.
