Spider-man swings into action in his latest adventure, Spider-man: Web of Shadows” width=”402″ height=”215″ />

Spider-man games, as a whole, have been hit or miss.

While there have been some successes, notably with Spider-man 2 for the Playstation 2, Xbox and Gamecube, along with the original Spider-Man game for the Playstation 1, the wall-crawler’s career in the gaming world hasn’t always allowed him to greet his supporters with pride. This mediocre record was exacerbated with lackluster reviews for Spider-man’s latest adventures, Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man: Friend or Foe.

With these disappointments in mind, the announcement of Spider-man’s latest game, Web of Shadows, was met with lukewarm enthusiasm at first, as concerns still existed over the tepid reviews of Spider-man’s previous products. However, once the game’s features and trailers started appearing, enthusiasm slowly but surely started returning. After all, this game’s promises – which include a streamlined combat system, a way to gauge character morality and the chance to interact with both the normal and symbiote-based suits – are marked improvements over previous Spider-man offerings.

Interestingly, one aspect in Web of Shadows that is also showcased is the game’s increasingly dark edge. This is clearly showcased in the trailer below, which shows the famous wall-crawler walking on top of a building before preparing to engage in web-swinging. Throughout his walk, he ruminates on what has happened to the city and its populace. Along with these questions, he wonders aloud about how he is expected to stem this madness, even asking “How do I deal with the darkness, without losing myself to it?”

How players choose to answer this question will be the focal point of their experiences with Spider-man: Web of Shadows, which will be see release on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Playstation 2, Playstation Portable and Nintendo DS on October 21, 2008. Hopefully, this will be the game that solidifies the wall-crawler’s reputation as a consistently successful video game hero.

<object
