A unique aspect of Mabinogi is that it has a constantly expanding storyline with special quests that people subscribing to premium services have access to. When you first visit the game’s homepage, you’ll likely see an announcement discussing Generation X Season Y. This is a quick way to determine what the latest game updates are and the most recent storyline.

At the moment, the North American version of Mabinogi is in Generation 3 Season 2. (The Korean version is in Generation 9.) This means, if you end up subscribing to a premium service, you will start with the Generation 1 storyline, and then work your way through 2 and 3.

The question is, are the storyline quests in Mabinogi right for all players? Some casual players may be more than satisfied with the free content offered throughout the game, especially since the storyline quests require a bit of commitment to complete. Gamertell has compiled five questions to ask yourself to determine if the Mabinogi Generation quests are worth paying for a premium service for.

1. Do I spend enough time playing Mabinogi?

If you’re a casual Mabinogi player, logging in only once a week and just taking on basic jobs or dungeon crawling for fun, then the main storyline quests may not be the right choice for you. There are also level requirements to even trigger each Generation’s quests (5 for G1, 25 for G2), which you may not meet. These quests will also require you to travel throughout the game’s world, and not stay centered in one town or region. They may even require you to level up a skill you normally wouldn’t use (like blacksmithing). You’ll likely need to log in to play at least two times a week to make it worth your while.

2. Am I able to commit to the game for however long it will take to complete the quests?

As mentioned in question one, you actually have to commit to Mabinogi to get the quests done. Generation 1′s storyline consists of 29 quests, some of them requiring you to work with other players and others requiring you to wait a certain amount of time for events to proceed. Generations 2 and 3 are significantly shorter though, consisting of 16 each (G3 also has an extra quest if you want to take the time). If you really commit yourself, you can probably finish a Generation in a month, but that may even be pushing it. It could take three or maybe even four months to complete.

3. Can I afford to play?

Completing the three Generation storylines so far could take quite a bit of time, depending on how often you’re able to play. It could take anywhere from two to five months, maybe more if you get distracted by other games or real life. The three cheapest premium services each cost $9.50/9,500 NX for 30 days. This means it could cost you between $19 and $47.50 to complete the first three Generations, maybe more. Plus, by the time you finish Generation 3, Generation 4 may have begun. While Generation 4 doesn’t have a set storyline like the previous three Generations, it will still have content exclusive to premium service subscribers.

Do I want to be able to access the Paladin and Dark Knight classes and other extra incentives later on?

Generation 1′s storyline reward is getting more information on Mabinogi‘s background story, the title “who Saved the Goddess” (which boosts Will and Luck by 20, increases minimum and maximum damage by one and increases your MP by 10) and gives you a Goddess scroll that you can use to enchant a weapon to make it more powerful. The good stuff happens in Generations 2 and 3. Generation 2 allows you to transform into a Paladin for a brief period each day in game time, boosting your stats and allowing you access to special skills. Generation 3 allows players to change to and access the Dark Knight transformation, which has its own stat boosts and special skills. Both the Paladin and Dark Knight transformations can only be accessed while you are paying for a premium service too, so if you went to all the trouble to complete the Generations, you’ll only be able to use Generation 2 and 3′s rewards when you’re still subscribing.

Do I have friends who also play, that I can call on for help with storyline quests?

This is more important than you may realize. Many of the Generation storyline quests require you to crawl through dungeons in a group to defeat monsters or meet certain objectives. If you don’t know other people playing, it could take you a lot longer to complete the quests, because you’ll have to try and form a group with strangers. So guild members and people with friends also playing Mabinogi will have a much easier time getting through the main storyline (and have more fun doing it). If you prefer playing alone, then you may not be able to make it through.

  1. I did G2 in 5 days. 2 months? Level up man. 4 months is simply ridiculous.

  2. People with full time jobs and other obligations may not have the time necessary to devote to the game so they can beat it in 5 days.

    I know I don't.
