When Mortal Kombat II was released on the Playstation Network in April 2007, it was met with lukewarm praise from critics. While it was regarded as one of the best opportunities at the time for Mortal Kombat fans to engage each other online, flaws including problematic execution of its online functionality and game’s emulation prevented it from reaching the zenith of internet-based competitive fighting desired by players.
Problems aside, the game was enjoyable in its own right, making its sudden disappearance from the Playstation Network all the more disappointing for Mortal Kombat fans.
I may not have always liked the Mortal Kombat series as a whole but some of my best moments in gaming consisted of playing Mortal Kombat II in the nearby bowling alley and using Liu Kang’s bicycle kick to lay waste to the opposition. Another favorite moment involved using Sub-Zero’s floor freeze maneuver to make opponents look silly while I employed various combination techniques to ensure their defeat.
To see a game like this disappear without warning is extremely disconcerting; it leaves me to wonder whether other games will just vanish from PSN without any rhyme or reason. As it stands now, the Mortal Kombat series is struggling to remain relevant in this console generation, and is summarily hinging its hopes on its latest title, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, to regain some of its lost popularity.
With that much pressure on its shoulders, missteps like this one are simply unacceptable. Should this game fail to receive critical and/or commercial acceptance, the Mortal Kombat series may very well become its own fatality.
