When the original Prince of Persia saw release by Jordan Mechner in 1989, it managed to distinguish itself from other platformers at the time due to its real-time nature and punishing difficulty, the latter often frustrating novice players and really separating the men from the boys.
Since its humble origins on the PC, the Prince of Persia series has progressed to see release on every major console, including the NES, Super NES, Game Boy Color, Game Gear, Amiga and Macintosh. The Prince’s latest adventures, chronicled in the Sands of Time trilogy, were regarded highly by players when they were released for the Playstation 2, Xbox and GameCube.
For players that didn’t care for the three-dimensional gameplay offered in that trilogy, however, delighted in the release of Prince of Persia Classic for the Xbox 360’s Live Marketplace. This game was successful in combining the aesthetic designs of the Sands of Time trilogy with the classic two-dimensional gameplay of the original Prince of Persia games, resulting in an experience that pleased both fans and critics.
This classic adventure is now set to make its debut on the Playstation Network this Thursday (October 23, 2008). No additional features are known at this point, meaning that game may not come bundled with Trophies. However, it will provide players the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Prince before his latest adventure makes its debut this holiday season.
While I am excited about the release of this game, I fear that my wallet will be unable to perform the required amount of miracles in order to afford it, especially considering the rush of other quality titles later in the year.
