10 influentual 1980′s edutainment games honored at Educational Games Research Blog

The Educational Games Research Blog recently took the time to compile a list of the ten most influential educational games of the 80′s,a wonderful list that honors a slew of games that many gamers likely grew up playing. I know for a fact that I’ve played and enjoyed at least half of the games on the list.

The list contains both popular and forgotten favorites. Some of the most notable of the ten cited are The Oregon Trail, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, SimCity, Lemonade Stand, Math Blaster and Number Munchers. The listing for each game offers commentary on the actual title, what educational value the game was supposed to have and when it was originally released.

I’d completely forgotten about Number Munchers until I’d read this list. I remember back in grade school, my class had only two really broke down computers. The only games we had were Solitaire, Word Munchers, Number Munchers and Oregon Trail. Despite that, there’d be fights over whose turn it’d be to travel the trail or find multiples of 5. It got grisly. Now I’m going to have to find out if there’s a flash version of Number Munchers online.
