We all already know that Coraline, the fantastic book by Neil Gaiman, is going to be made into a movie and video game. Well, now that the movie’s February 6, 2009 release date is creeping closer, D3 Publisher has released more information about the game’s plot and a worldwide release for the games have been announced.
The Coraline games almost sound like a possible point-and-click adventure titles, since the press release says players will explore the her normal home apartment flat and the Other world as well. Mini-games are also promised (naturally – it is going to be geared towards children), as well as missions with Coraline’s friends Wybie and Cat. The game is going to appear on the DS, PS2 and Wii.
Call me crazy, but I do not remember Coraline having a friend named Wybie in the book, and I’ve read it three times. I even had to write a paper on it, analyzing it for a college fairy-tale fiction class. No Wybie. And the cat certainly didn’t have a name. It was just a cat. Part of the point of the book was that Coraline was strong and smart enough to oretty much work everything out on her own.
Honestly, the only thing that is still giving me hope that this Coraline movie adaptation might be good is that Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French were cast as Miss Forcible and Miss Spink. French and Saunders rock. The only thing better would have been if Joanna Lumley had been cast instead of French.

Yeah i hope they do it justice too, that was a rally creepy book…and we had that class together remember? Good old Hoberg!

@ Jessi – Yup, movie & game. Even though the movie has 'some' good casting, I'm not sure I want to see it. The book was just so amazing, and I think they'd screw it up.
I miss Hoberg's classes! He was such a nice and funny old man!

Iv never read the book but i am a massive fan of stop motion animation so I cant weight to see it.

Hey, Jenni. I'm a fan of the book as well, but I think I'm more optimistic about the screen translation. I'm guessing Wybie will be the device used as the voice in Coraline's head, instead of letting us hear her thoughts directly, but we'll find out soon enough.
Also, Bill Stiteler with us over at Appletell has seen the movie (connections are wonderful things). He says it's good, but it's not nearly as "unsettling" as the book.

I may miss that.
I'm still gonna go see the movie, just because, well, I feel like I have to.
My son is 5 and he was very scared but he got the message that kids are only safe with their parents and no one is better than your mom and dad.
