Code Collective has just released the first beta of the massive multiplayer online strategic card game, The Far Wilds. Both a 3D, downloadable PC version, and a PC and Mac flash version of The Far Wilds can now be accessed from the official website. Code Collective will also be hosting a The Far Wilds Grand Clash competition in late November, 2008, where players can take part in tournaments (using either the PC or Flash versions) to possibly win a $1000 cash prize or in-game gold.
The Far Wilds sounds like an online version of a typical collectible card game, with a little bit of Stratego thrown into the mix. You start at a randomly generated “battlefield,” with a selection of possible cards to use. The goal is to get a predetermined amount of glory to win. Glory is earned by getting flux wells. If you do well, you win gold that can be used to buy more cards and build a larger army.
I decided to try The Far Wilds‘s Flash version. I failed. Miserably. The in-game tutorial isn’t helpful at all, and I felt like I was floundering. Perhaps this is due to the fact that I don’t play collectible card games. I am a Stratego champ, but I guess that wasn’t enough. Perhaps Magic or other card-game players would have more success playing The Far Wilds. It looks good, but the gameplay is beyond me.
