All right gamers, we all know tonight is the best holiday ever (aside from maybe the December holidays) because you get to dress up as fictional characters or strange permutations of everyday things (zombie nurse, anyone?) and eat tons of candy. And we all know gamers love to dress up as game-related things. However, a few costumes just don’t have their luster anymore, after countless iterations every year, and I am naming them officially cliched. Folks, if you’re dressing up as one of these characters this year, please try to do something new with it, or you deserve to sit in a corner and play terrible Wii games all night. You’ve been warned.
5. Any Final Fantasy character.
Yes, cosplayers – I’m looking at you! Unless you’re going for one of the less anthropomorphic FF characters (like a Chocobo!) this one’s a pretty tired cliche. Go with lesser known RPG characters – they need Halloween love too, you know!
4.A zombie from… (Resident Evil, Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising, etc.)
This one’s a no-no because there’s no creativity involved – throwing some goopy stuff on your face and saying “braaaains” all night does not make you a cool, creative gamer. Go as a licker or one of the more creative bosses from Dead Rising instead – you’ll get all the stares (and knowing nods) that you deserve if you put in a little extra effort.
3. Sophitia/any female character from the Soul Calibur series
Ladies, putting two balloons on your chest and dressing like a dominatrix may make your boyfriend happy, but really, let’s not go there. Instead, why not go for one of the cooler ass-kicking girl characters from recent games like Faith from Mirror’s Edge or hell, even Cortana from the Halo series. And if you’re really looking to vamp it up fighter-style, why not go with Kitana from Mortal Kombat – it’s old enough to be funny and sexy now.
2. Random gamer dude
Oh, you know these people. They wear a shirt with an “Atari” logo and run around with an NES zapper, and they call themselves costumed. Don’t let this tired, creatively bankrupt person be you – be a homeless random gamer dude or undead gamer dude. Anything to spice it up.
1. Mario and/or Luigi
Yes, this little guy (or guys, in the 2-person variation) is iconic, cute, instantly recognizable to non-gamers, and fun. But it’s been done to death and back! If you must dress up as the titular Bros. try putting a twist on it – try zombie Mario and Luigi, or surfer Mario or something for a little twist.
