Midway to perform fatalities on its staff after major title releases

I sure hope Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is a good game.

Actually, I hope it is a great game not only because I consider myself a fan of the series but because it may be the only way in which Midway can pull itself out of the proverbial fire.

The company has been struggling of late to the point where it has had to go through some extreme measures just to complete one of its high-profile games. These struggles have resulted in staff members being handed pink slips in its Austin, TX (USA), studio.

Sadly, it’s looking like more slips will be distributed. Midway Chicago has announced that it will lay off a portion of its staff once Mortal Kombat v. DC Universe and Blitz: The League 2 are completed.
1UP reports that the publisher claims these layoffs are part of “normal re-evaluation of staff levels following a major project.”

That sounds unusually far fetched. Epic’s staff appears to remain fully intact and players and critics have seen the quality of the company’s products. Even Sega, a company similarly questionable game quality, appears to have an intact staff. All of this causes one to wonder what is going on at the company that successfully brought “fatality,” “brutality,” “finish him” and “babality” into the fighting-game lexicon.

In the midst of this news, Midway continues to fight its usual enemies of struggling profitability and low stock prices. Strong reviews and successful sales of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe would prove the perfect antidote to cure this dreadful poison.

Otherwise, Midway may become their own fatality.
