Dreamcast PC Mod

I, like many gamers, am particularly fond of the Dreamcast. I still have mine hooked up to a VGA monitor in the corner of my pseudo-office. So you can understand why I had a big smile across my face when I saw that someone had the ambition to convert the Dreamcast into a PC mod. Sheer awesome.

What makes things even more interesting as that the enthusiasts of Akiba PC in Japan, the people who put this thing together, actually kitted this machine with some fairly impressive specs, including:

  • Sony NEC BC-5500A Blu-ray drive
  • AMD mini-ITX mainboard with 780G Chipset
  • ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
  • HDMI output
  • 4GB RAM
  • 160GB storage
  • Four USB ports

It uses an 120W AC adapter, runs Windows XP Service Pack 2 and keeps itself cool thanks to 100mm fans on the bottom of the case. If only Sega had these specs when the Dreamcast was still a contemporary video game system rather than an enthusiasts trip down memory lane.

Engadget points out that this mod was made for roughly $1,045 and probably won’t be available at Best Buy ever.
