Nintendo DSi

Yet another Nintendo makes money story to roll your eyes at. Nintendo’s newest addition to its handheld family, the DSi, is being reported by Japanese media research company, Enterbrain, to having sold 535,379 units. The system launched November 1, 2008, and is already outselling its competition. I bet no one out there is surprised. (Well, most everyone.)

As of now, the DS family has sold 24,239,590 systems since December 2004 with half being sales of DS Lites. If this doesn’t prove everything Nintendo touches turns into a money printer, I don’t know what does.

The DSi features a SD card slot, a wider and (supposedly) brighter screen, enhanced Wi-Fi, two built-in cameras and an online store. Currently, the DSi is set to launch worldwide Summer 2009, with Gamasutra hinting at sometime around April 2009 for North America.

Would-be importers of the handheld have been coy on impulsively buying the Japan-only system due to region locks courtesy of the built-in web browser. The DSi can play all regular DS games without region restrictions but DSi games, which are few right now, can’t be played on a different regional system.
