PS3 owners may still have to wait a bit for Namco Bandai’s PowerUp Forever to appear on the PlayStation Network, but Xbox 360 owners can play today (December 10, 2008), as its now on Xbox Live Arcade for 800 Microsoft Points/$10. PowerUp Forever is another stylish shooter (think Space Invaders Extreme, only different), where you shoot up at oncoming aliens. What sets it apart, is the ability to make your ship grow and evolve.
The goal in PowerUp Forever is fairly typical, destroy all the aliens and take down the Guardian bosses. But when you do this, your ship changes. You take in the bosses’ energy, making you stronger. Then, even stronger aliens step up to be defeated. Best of all, its all randomly generated, so you won’t be replaying the same levels over and over. There are also online leaderboards and a wide selection of extra modes, like Survival, Guardian Rush, Defender, where you can only defend, and not attack, and Overkill, where you can go nuts using your weapons.
Since PowerUp Forever is constantly changing, it could be a good investment. Personally, the Overkill Mode appeals to me. I’m horrible at shooters and the ability to have unlimited weapons would be the perfect way to play.
