Considering the negative press that video games have and will likely continues to receive, it remains noteworthy when a positive games-related story makes itself known.
The latest game beneficiary is Dezmone Briscoe, a fullback for the University of Kansas football team. According to an interview with the Kansas City Star, he cited Madden NFL 09 as the reason for his successful season. Expanding this point further, he attributed the improvements between Madden NFL 09 and its predecessor as keys to his enhanced performance.
Words like that can definitely help in getting a player positive exposure in the gaming community. For Briscoe in particular, it could most likely result in him becoming the cover athlete for Madden 2010, or whatever name EA chooses to grant the next title in the Madden franchise.
In reading the Kansas City Star, it was difficult to judge what tone J. Brady McCollough, the writer of the article, set in place when evaluating Briscoe on his gaming-related success. However, one could judge his opinion of the gaming medium as dismissive through comments such as “being lazy and spending hours on the couch helped you become a second-team All-Big 12 performer?”
Congratulations to Briscoe for his success. One only hopes that other sports games can be this influential on athletes.
