CES 2009: WiTricity promises a world without any cables

We’ve all been in a situation in which we had to choose which one of our electricity powered devices would be plugged in and which one would go wanting. We’ve resorted to using bundles of extension cords and power strips that can may not be so easy on the eyes when company comes over to watch a movie or play games.

The 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is expected to show off the first products that have done away with all of those troublesome cables once and for all, according to The Observer.

Products such as digital picture frames, speakers and forms of lighting will show off what “WiTricity” is all about.

These aren’t just plain wireless products. WiTricity is the idea of gathering electricity wirelessly, similar to the way WiFi internet works. A company called PowerBeam will be at CES to demonstrate the technology.

PowerBeam hopes to make recharging devices a thing of the past by using a powered up form of a laser that will charge products when needed. It apparently causes no health risks to anyone who may be in the path of the laser and is a huge step to becoming an energy efficient tech society.

This can have a huge impact on future gaming consoles and peripherals. The amount of power needed to operate consoles such as the PS3 and Xbox 360 could stand to be a little more efficient and this technology would be perfect for controllers. It’s still a good ways off before WiTricity invades the gaming world but, if it works, it certainly will.
