Hats off to Guitar Hero III, the first ever game to reach one billion dollars in sales. It only took 26 months to do it too. Activision, the publisher of this phenomenal game, announced that the Guitar Hero franchise reached over a billion dollars in revenues (according to data from the NPD group) just last year. Now, Guitar Hero III has reached 1 billion dollars in sales by itself, making it the first game ever to do so.

Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith announced this record breaking information during his keynote address at CES. Griffith also noted that Guitar Hero has a profound on effect on the music industry. For example, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith sold over three times as many copies as Aerosmith’s last album.

Now for some statistics from Game Daily (everyone loves stats):

  • 25,000 songs were generated by users in the first 10 days of World Tour’s release.
  • 141,000 songs have been created so far with World Tour.
  • The Guitar Hero community has over 600,000 members.
  • To date, there have been 21 million user song downloads.

Griffith, among many others, believe that video games will dominate the entertainment industry in the years to come.
