CyberSports’ free-to-play soccer massive multiplayer online game is getting pretty popular. Apparently, Football Superstars‘ registered members base is growing at a pretty steady rate. In May, 2008 there were only 25,000 people registered, and now there’s over 250,000. Not too bad.
Football Superstars lets you become a football/soccer star. You create a personal character, then are released in virtual world where football is the focus. You can join up with other players to play games ranging from 3 on 3 to 11 on 11. You get stronger and gain more abilities as you play in more matches, making you a better and more in demand player.
There’s more to Football Superstars than just the sport though. When you aren’t taking part in a game, you can buy new items for your character, can talk and hang out with other players, train, visit clubs or deal with paparazzi.
Normally I’d be hesistant about a sports MMO, since you’d think the focus would be on, you know, the sport. But Football Superstars‘ balance and variety makes it sound really appealing.

Multiplying their users by 10 in only 7 months? Wow, something is clearly working for these folks. Agreed, sports isn't generally the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions MMO, but perhaps I need to rethink my thinking. Off to give this one a look see. Thanks!
