The daily deluge of industry woes unfortunately continues as Edge confirmed rumors that Sega of America has laid off around 30 people. A rep for the company blamed the biggest villain in the game industry right now, the flagging economy.

The House of Hedgehog hasn’t said exactly how this will affect any upcoming titles. Joystiq suggests Sega focus less on ruining the Sonic franchise and more on “unique properties” like pleasant PlayStation 3 strategy RPG surprise Valkyria Chronicles. I echo the sentiment but we all know that even if there are only two employees left at Sega, they’ll be working round the clock on another (probably poorly received) Sonic installment.

As long as we’re throwing out our dreams for the company, may I have another Shenmue game, please? This console generation has been sorely lacking in games that allow us to look for some sailors.
