Prince of Persia movie logoWhen I first heard Hollywood was contemplating a Prince of Persia movie, I had to stifle back some laughter. But, with Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbeanm CSI) on board, the idea isn’t as funny as I first thoguht.

In an interview withLatino Review, Bruckheimer talked about a video game-based movie with a chance of being really good.

Bruckheimer told the film site that, as far as scope, Prince of Persia is “enormous” and will be a big romantic adventure with lots of parkour (aka free running). He stopped short of calling it the next Pirates because the super producer said even he didn’t realize how big the Pirates franchise would become.

Eagle-eyed movie fans will have a chance to scope out the first promotional poster for this movie in Confessions of a Shopaholic. While that may seem like an odd place to attract fans of a hit video game series, Bruckheimer said there were places in the scenery for movie ads and they initially had other movies. It occurred to the producer to put ads for films he was working on as opposed to promoting some other company’s films.

As far as story goes, the first film is inspired by the first game in the revamped Prince of Persia series, The Sands of Time. The Sands storyline carries through a game trilogy so there’s plot enough for three movies if Bruckheimer is interested. If the first movie, due in 2010, turns a profit it’s a safe bet there will be two more.

Jake Gyllenhaal will play the film’s title role with Gemma Arterton, Alfred Molina and Ben Kingsley rounding out the cast. Kingsley was also in the Uwe Boll debacle BloodRayne, joining Angelina Jolie (who played Lara Croft in two films) as the only other Academy Award winner who has appeared in two video-game-to-film adaptations. There’s some trivia that will likely never be of use to you, ever.
