As we’ve reported, EA is so, so sorry it came late to this Nintendo Wii party. Another installment in its apology is Wii-exclusive NASCAR Kart Racing, which will send NASCAR racers down the same family friendly streets paved by the likes of Mario and Crash Bandicoot.

The game takes real life NASCAR drivers and pits them against 10 original characters known as “Outsiders” and, while it’s licensed through NASCAR, tracks will feature cartoonish obstacles such as boulders and jumps over rivers. The game does feature real NASCAR tracks including Daytona International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, Dover International Speedway and Bristol Motorspeedway.

It’s scheduled to ship February 10, 2009, before the official start of the 2009 NASCAR season. Up to four players can go head-to-head via split screen.

See, it’s got cute cartoony characters and the whole family can play! Ouch, EA is so family-friendly now it hurts. All kidding aside, if this is done well it could have crossover appeal. I don’t have the patience for regular NASCAR but if they threw boulders at the cars I would totally watch that.

Sadly, I think everything I learned about racing came from Speed Racer and Wacky Races. Once I found out there wasn’t a racing circuit in which it was legal to put voice-operated metal spikes in your tires, I lost all interest in the real sport.
