As you can guess by the name, which includes the new continent of Iria in the title, the focus of the expansion is going to be on the adventures, races, sites and skills that can be found in Iria. If you like to focus on Generations, then you can consider Pioneers of Iria to be Nexon’s way of giving the players Generations 4, 5 and 6 all at once.
Iria is a massive continent, filled with desert, rainforest and alpine areas. Aside from new monsters and environment changes, players will notice the fact that Moon Gates are no where to be found. Instead, Mana Tunnels, which only work in the morning, are the method used to quickly travel around the continent.
You’ll also notice that some of the characters look different. That’s because Elf and Giant races are now going to be a part of Mabinogi. So players can now choose two different race options, with new benefits and abilities, when creating a character. If you decide to go with one of these two races though, be prepared to get pulled into PvP confrontations – Giants and Elves are mortal enemies and have a venomous relationship.
There are benefits to creating these characters, which make them perhaps more interesting to play as than humans. Elves are fast and agile – they run faster than both humans and giant, are expert archers who can shoot two arrows at once, reload while running and attack on horseback. Giants, on the other hand, can dual wield blunt weapons and two handed swords, can knock down trees to gain an impromptu weapon or carry a human character piggyback. Plus, both races will have exclusive clothes, weapons, titles and abilities. Some special skills include Stump and Full Swing for Giants, and Mirage Missile and Elven Magic Missile for Elves.
When it comes to marriage, character race animosity is in play again. Humans can marry anyone, and Elves and Giants can’t marry each other. An important note is that if a human is married to an Elf or Giant, then that human is expected to be on their spouse’s side in the whole race war.
There are also going to be tons of new skills and abilities to make fighting or exploring the world more interesting. You can now explore areas to find items, using the exploration skill and taking part in over 600 exploration quests. Humans and giants can now dual wield, and while elves can’t, they can shoot two arrows at once to make up for it. The ice spear spell will be added to the game as well, and players will be able to throw stones at monsters and items, play dead to protect themselves, sketch monsters or items, use the L-Rod to find things or land maker to check for buried objects.
