Dokapon Journey DSAtlus localized Dokapon Kingdom for the PS2 and Wii, so it shouldn’t really come as any surprise that its just announced the localization of Dokapon Journey for the DS. Sting’s RPG/board game hybrid once again has players fighting to dispatch monsters from Dokapon, with the chance to rule the kingdom, and Princess Penny, going to the winner. The only thing is, you’ll have to wait till April 14, 2009 to play it.

There are single and multiplayer modes. Alone, you have to go through the board game against computer controlled opponents. If the DS version is anything like the Wii incarnation, the AI will be borderline brutal. You can also play against up to three other friends, using either single card multiplayer or multi-card multiplayer. I’ve found Dokapon’s best played with friends though, so make sure you have friends with DS units before buying it.

The thing to remember in Dokapon games is to be ready to be brutal. No one’s going to help you, you have to stand up for yourself. If you want to win, you’ll have to use items to put your opponents, real or computer controlled, down. You’ll also want to have some RPG experience under your belt, since attacking monsters plays a huge part.

Ah, if only Dokapon Journey was Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection compatible. Then it would be a definite must buy. So far, it seems like the Japan-exclusive Itadaki Street DS is the only DS board game style video game with Wi-Fi multiplayer. It’s a shame – you’d think it’d be essential for games where the focus is on the multiplayer experience.

  1. Oh man, there are so many must-buy games coming out this winter/spring for me…I really didn't need another one added to the pile.

Dokapon Kingdom is just so fun though, I don't know if I can resist a portable version. >_<
