Lego Pirates Pirate Survival Set manYou know that buzz that’s been going around about a Lego Battles game? It turns out that it is going to be a DS game. Even more surprising – instead of being a fighting game, like everyone assumed from the title, it’s going to be more of a strategic RPG.

Lego Battles is going to be based on the original toys, with the Lego Castle, Pirates and Space themes specifically mentioned in the press release. There are six different stories in the game, and 70 levels. The goal is to build bases and battle squads, based on popular Lego toy lines, and send them off to battle against other Lego toy lines.

It turns out that there will also be multiplayer, but some details about it are fuzzy. The press release says there will be “wireless DS multi-card play,” but then doesn’t elaborate on whether the wireless part refers to local or Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. I’m thinking it’s probably referring to local multiplayer.

The release date is still uncertain as well. I suppose for now, we can just hope that it will be out sometime in 2009.

  1. Jenni,

What leads you to believe that it's going to be just local multiplayer? Seems like they're giving up something by doing that, although I suppose they could have full multiplayer waiting in the wings to roll out later….

  2. I'm just speculating, based on what I've seen in previous press releases.

Usually when a game makes use of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the press release makes specific note of it. It seems that companies really like to show off when a game is going to have that extra feature, because it can be incredibly influential. I know that if a game I'm on the fence about has Wi-Fi multiplayer, it'll usually help me decide to buy it.

The press release quote the refers to multiplayer says this exactly:
"Players can also challenge friends on the battlefield in multiplayer mode through wireless DS multi-card play."

It seems to have been left vague on purpose. Perhaps you're right, they may very well include both local and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection multiplayer and they're keeping it as an ace to really get people buying Lego Battles.

I agree with you though, that TT Games and Warner Bros. Interactive would be letting players down if they don't include Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection support.
