We prefer to gloss over the fact that RPGs basically are all the same, but it’s pretty much true. Evil menace appears, underage novices get caught in some massive struggle, novices turn into legendary warriors and 40-60 hours later the day is saved.

My World, My Way isn’t like that, and that’s part of it’s charm. It isn’t some drastic and far-reaching epic. The dialogue isn’t peppered with archaic accents. It isn’t about saving the world.

It’s all about helping Princess Elise become a warrior and possibly snagging the gorgeous adventurer who spurned her as her boyfriend.

My World My Way

It’s Elise’s world – everyone else is just lucky enough to live in it.

Elise gets everything. That’s how it always has been, and how she thought it always would be. See, she has everything except for a boyfriend. So, she gets a wonderful, lavish ball thrown in her honor. She ends up meeting the man of her dreams. Everything seemed to be going her way.

Except there was no way this man of her dreams, an adventurer, wanted anything to do with a spoiled princess. He told her that, if she cast off this lifestyle and tried living the life of a warrior, maybe he’d consider her. So, that’s what she did. She set off to prove herself, and show that the world is no match for a selfish, opinionated princess.

My World, My Way

Visit Generic Town A, perform Quest #1, Defeat Boss, Repeat.

So basically, you go through the entire world of My World, My Way, trying to prove Elise’s worth. After about the first half of the game, where you’ve gotten used to the game’s formula and acquired a substantial Pout Point reserve, you’ll really be able to take on anything the game throws at you.

That isn’t to say the game isn’t fulfilling. It is. If you’re one of those players who loves get perfect your characters in an RPG, then My World, My Way will definitely give you something to work towards. It also has an atypical heroine and storyline, so you won’t be bored watching some group of chosen warriors vanquishing an unspeakable, evil menace.

It also doesn’t have any glaring flaws. The music is a bit generic, yes, but it isn’t horrible. In towns, the top screen is essentially useless, but the majority of the game is spent out exploring the world and dungeons, so it isn’t much of an issue. If anything, My World, My Way‘s downfall is that, if the motivation, writing and unique characters were removed, it’d just be an average game.

My World, My Way

Unique and memorable, but easy to beat.

My World, My Way moves quickly. It has likeable, or at the very least interesting characters. The localization was handled well, so the dialogue is entertaining and unusual. There’s also a bit of variety thrown in, what with Elise needing to not only traverse areas above ground, but underground dungeons as well. Sure, it isn’t some Final Fantasy-style epic, but it isn’t trying to be that. It is just trying to be offer a little variety in a genre where cliche tends to overwhelm players.

My World, My Way may suffer from many of the typical RPG pitfalls – like endless fetch quests and mindless level grinding, but the storyline, world altering options and clever delivery help save it from becoming another empty endeavor. It may be a bit too pink for some gamers, or a bit too repetitive for others, but if you’re looking for a lighthearted way to spend roughly 25 hours, My World, My Way is a viable option.
