gears of war prequelGears of War 2 proved that sometimes, the second time around can indeed be better than the first.

With millions of copies already sold and a sure bet for Game of the Year Nominations all-around, this weekend at Comic Con New York (February 7, 2009), Gears of War 2 writer Joshua Ortega stated to a room full of fans that they could expect more in the next ten years from the series, including a possible prequel that deals with the Emergence Day (E-Day) event that was the starting point of the war between the Human race and the Locust.

Specifically, Ortega said, as quoted by IGN:

“You will not be disappointed in the next ten years. It’s a ten-year plan. Gears’ is long-term. The lancer is the new lightsaber.” Ortega said to the fans in response to a question to the possible prequel.

However, as excitement built for a Gears of War prequel, it was revealed that fans would indeed get to witness how the war between man and the Locust began, but only in written form, titled, “The Battle Aspho Fields“.

The panel that focused on all things Gears’ related also made mention of more single player Downloadable Content to come for Xbox Live users.

“Keep watching,” Ortega said. “You won’t be disappointed.”

As for the Gears of War novel, it is due out in August of 2009.
