Nintendo DSi

It’s now official. According to a Nintendo press release, the next iteration of the Nintendo DS hardware will be coming to North America on April 5, 2009 at a $169.99 price point.

Upon arrival, the Nintendo DSi will have two color schemes for us consumers to choose from: Black and Blue. Missing from the color lineup is the white version which was one of the debut colors in Japan. Why its missing is beyond us but that’s Nintendo for you.

To recap, the Nintendo DSi will introduce two cameras to the handheld system, one on the outside of the system and one on the inside that will be used to interact with games as well as take pictures. Also included will be a program dubbed Nintendo DSi Sound. This will basically be a voice recorder/mp3 player and will use the included SD card slot to store and play music. The system will also feature a web browser and slightly larger screen.

Of course the biggest addition will be Nintendo DSiWare. This is going to be the digital distribution service similar to WiiWare. It’s not currently known what will be available at launch, but DSiWare games will start out at 200 Nintendo DSi points. Yes, there will be separate points for DSi software and Wii software.

In case you are wondering, yes, you can still play your original DS games including original DS imports, however you cannot play imported DSi games.

So now that everything is all set in place, are you going to buy one? Will this be replacing your old DS or is there just not enough bang for the buck on this one? Let us know below.

  1. ahh no I won't be getting the DSi as I just brought a Lite today and so the last thing I would do is buy the DSi… for me it's a step back for Nintendo, instead of forward so I wanted to Lite :D

  2. How is it possibly a step back for nintendo. Smaller size, bigger screens, more power, 2 cameras, and internet access?
