World of Goo
Nintendo’s WiiWare turns one year old today, and the company was happy to issue a cheerful press release to mark the occasion, as they are wont to do. It was all smiles and “look at our great games” which was nice, but the good stuff came towards the end of the statement, with a preview for the higher-profile releases that are slated to go up in the coming months. Listing the likes of Cave Story, Icarian Kindred Spirits, Super Meat Boy, BIT.TRIP CORE and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, things are looking hot for the service.

I wanted to take a moment to recognize the very best – and very worst from WiiWare’s first year. There have been some truly amazing games – and some real pieces of excrement.

The best:

World of Goo – WOG is truly one of the most fun, innovative puzzlers ever to come from a two-person studio.
Bit.Trip.Beat
Bit.Trip.Beat – This was retro-futuristic in the best and most stylish way – I’m looking forward to its “sequel”.

Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People – This game combines StrongBad humor with excellent point-and-click adventure, two flavors that taste great together.

The Worst:
Family Pirate Party
Family Pirate Party – though none of the “Family” games have been exactly stellar, Pirate Party takes the cake for being about pirates – and it still sucks. It’s lame, not very fun, and a total rip-off of all that is wrong with the Wii. Family Glide Hockey also deserves a special mention here.

Hockey Allstar Shootout – this honestly makes the awful Family Glide Hockey look like NHL 2009.

Finally, Midnight Bowling takes the last spot for being as drab and uninspiring as a particularly lame PS1 bowling game.

Agree or disagree? Take it to the comments.

  1. I really think Nintendo should have done something special for Wii owners to celebrate. Perhaps a discount of some sorts on some of the most popular titles.

And don't forget LIT and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King under awesome games. :D Not to mention Tetris.
