Today is a phenomenal day for fans of the LucasArts classic series of adventure games Monkey Island. LucasArts and Telltale games have chosen E3 2009 to announce that there are two new Monkey Island games in the works, Tales of Monkey Island and The Secret of Monkey Island.
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is LucasArts’ reimagining of the 1990 computer game, The Secret of Monkey Island, for Xbox Live Arcade and PCs. A release date hasn’t been set, but it will be out sometime in Summer, 2009. It features an option to use HD graphics or the original images, as well as remastered music and voice acting for all characters. Players can also take advantage of a new hint system, if they’re having trouble making it through the game. The story remains unchanged. Guybrush wants to be a pirate, and falls for a woman named Elaine. She’s captured by a pirate ghost named LeChuck. So Guybrush has to prove himself as a pirate and save Elaine.
Tales of Monkey Island is a five episode game from Telltale Games that will be released on PCs and Nintendo’s WiiWare. It premieres July 7, 2009 with Launch of the Screaming Narwhal. Following episodes include The Siege of Spinner Cay, Lair of the Leviathan, The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood and Rise of the Pirate God. Telltale is already taking preorders, with a special $34.95 offer that lasts until July 6, 2009 and includes all five episodes, a collector’s DVD, a DVD slipcase, a free Telltale Games episode and access to the exclusive Monkey Island site. Tales of Monkey Island charts Guybrush’s adventures as he battles LeChuck, and then accidentally unleashes a pirate monster voodoo pox.
