New Super Mario Bros Wii

As wonderful as the 3D Super Mario games are, like Super Mario Galaxy and the forthcoming Super Mario Galaxy 2, sometimes you long for a simpler time. A time when things were just as challenging, but only in 2D. DS owners got a taste of that with New Super Mario Bros., and at Nintendo’s E3 2009 press conference the company revealed that Wii owners will get to experience that same delightful sense of 2D nostalgia in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Best of all, it’ll be out for the 2009 holiday season.

Super Mario Bros. Wii‘s a sidescrolling Mario adventure with a twist, you can play alone or with four other players in co-operative or competitive multiplayer. You can go through the main storyline alone, or, if you’re bored or need help, you can join up with three friends (who’ll take the roles of Luigi and two Toads). You can then help each other through the level, or try to make your friends miserable and reach the end first.

Here’s a preview video from E3:

As you can see, the two new propeller and penguin transformations both appear in the video, as well as fire flower powers and the ability to ride Yoshi.

After Super Mario Galaxy made me all discombobulated, I thought I’d have to miss out on Mario’s Wii adventures. Thanks to this latest, wonderful announcement, I won’t have to. It looks like Nintendo has another hit on its hands.
