Nintendo made a lot of mention of the upcoming WiiMotionPlus controller at it’s E3 2009 press conference. Meant to replace the WiiMote, Red Steel 2 will be the first game to use on the WiiMotionPlus and they will be bundled together.
The WiiMotionPlus appears to be a combination skin and attachment, covering the back of the WiiMote while adding an extra sensory pack to the bottom. It’s intended to increase the sensitivity of the WiiMote to offer more precise control of on-screen avatars on every access. It appears to round out the WiiMote’s otherwise boxy design, likely to help improve ergonomics (and make it a bit more grippy).
Games announced so far that will use (and in some cases ship with) the WiiMotionPlus include Red Steel 2 (bundled), Virtua Tennis 2009, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and Wii Sports Resort (July 26, 2009).
From Nintendo’s press release:
Nintendo’s Wii MotionPlus accessory offers motion-controlled precision when combined with specially designed games. When connected to the Wii Remote controller, it delivers on Nintendo’s promise to provide even more immersive physical reality in its games. The device senses subtle motion and can locate where and how players hold the Wii Remote controller in 3-D space. It pushes active gaming to new levels of immersion and a new standard of control. Wii MotionPlus will complement a host of third-party games launching in the next few weeks.
