The Last Guardian

The Last Guardian is undoubtedly the prettiest game to appear during Sony’s two hour E3 2009 press conference, and I get the feeling a lot of people would agree. Team Ico unveiled the trailer for the third game in a trilogy that includes the PlayStation 2 games Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Previously, the game was going under the code name Trico, so it’s nice to have a solid moniker to refer to it. Unfortunately, there’s still no sign of the release date and it is, of course, a PS3 exclusive.

The Last Guardian centers around the story of a young boy who looks a bit like Ico from Ico, only without the horns. There are dilapidated ruins, and a gigantic griffin inside. The boy and the griffin are clearly friends, perhaps the boy found and rescued him, and it looks as though the two take turns protecting each other from mysterious masked soldiers that seem to follow and chase them.

Here’s the trailer that was shown at E3 2009:

I can’t help thinking that it appears the griffin once had wings. If you look at its body during some of the screenshots, you can almost see where they would have gone, and how it seems there’s only remnants left. Perhaps the griffin was captured, chained and clipped by those mysterious masked soldiers that seem to be hunting both the boy and the griffin in the debut trailer. My guess is that the young boy is protecting this griffin, which may even be a baby, from the soldiers pursuing it.

My favorite part is the very end, where the boy and griffin are curled up together, sleeping. That is a definite “aw” moment.
