It’s one of the biggest paradoxes in gaming right now. Hardcore gamers with Nintendo Wiis have clamored that there are no titles released for them. But three Sega titles catering to that niche have met with cool sales so far in 2009. Sega’s first-person shooter The Conduit is the latest high-profile game to miss its target. The game moved only 72,000 titles in June, according to the latest NPD report numbers.

Sega placed a big focus on providing hardcore fare for the Wii, as the trio of MadWorld, House of the Dead: Overkill and The Conduit seemed to be the titles the system needed. But MadWorld and the House of the Dead sequel were met with the kind of lukewarm reception generally reserved for Sonic titles these days.

The Conduit wasn’t the only underachiever in June 2009 as EA’s Grand Slam Tennis sold only 54,000 units, not even cracking the Top 20 in Wii sales. It was a June swoon for the game industry in a number of ways but these weren’t the numbers Sega would like to see. The struggles of experienced game publishers such as Sega and EA show making hit Wii games is far from easy.

  1. i recently wrote an article speaking on the dominant sales of the wii system…and I wrote it backing those feeling with solid numbers…but my personal take on the wii..well i think of it as play time…when i get serious i fire up the 360 or ps3…with the wii, hardcore titles don't fit too well on that system…look at GTA on the DS..poor sales…
